Work Sample: Mental Health America

Problem: Mental Health America (MHA) is the nation’s leading nonprofit focused on helping all people live mentally healthier lives. In 2007, MHA sought to raise awareness among policymakers and the general public  about the need for policies to increase access to mental health services.

Solution: MHA engaged Porter Novelli, a leader in health communications, and Thomson Healthcare to compare depression levels and suicide rates among all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The resulting report, “Ranking America’s Mental Health: An Analysis of Depression Across the States,” demonstrated the statistical link between access and outcome.

Results: I led the media relations team that secured more than 70 million impressions across 87 media markets in 40 states. Top tier placements included USA Today, TIME magazine, CNN: American Morning, and the Associated Press. The campaign received PRWeek’s Nonprofit Award for Media Relations in 2008.
